When your father is quoted on the AFL website as being “one of the greatest players to have played the game” you would not have been alone in thinking you would spend your entire career in his shadow. For Gary Ablett Jr, this is no longer the case.
Son of one of the greatest forwards to have played the game; no small task when one considers the calibre of forwards viewers of this modern era of football have been privileged to watch.
Considering Lockett, Dunstall and Carey, just to name a few, many would have expected Ablett Jr to spend his career fruitlessly trying to live up to his father’s legacy.
But now after 243 games one can categorically claim this is no longer the case.
With his silky smooth skills and remarkable ability to change the game with one play Ablett Jr is a footballer unlike any who have come before him.
After an eight-year career at Geelong that saw him play 192 games, ‘Gazza’ made the decision to take up a new challenge at expansion team the Gold Coast Suns.
Many questioned whether he would be able to recreate the brilliance that saw him win two premierships, two Carji Greeves Medals and one Brownlow Medal without the experience and skill of his Geelong teammates.
Not only has he done this, since the move Gary Ablett Jr has only gotten better.
Fostering a team of inexperienced young talent, Ablett has led from the front delivering best on ground performances time after time without the luxury of a dominant or experienced midfield.
With his quick thinking and ability to win the ball in seemingly impossible situations Ablett constantly produces those marvellous moments that make this game so great.
At age 29 there are still some years left in his career and, barring some serious injury who knows, in years to come we may look back on him as not only the greatest Ablett to play the game, but the greatest player we have ever seen.
