V8s set to make Volvo announcement

V8 Supercars are set announce Volvo as the latest manufacturer to join the motorsport championship.

A press conference has been called for 11.30am AEST in Brisbane for a “major announcement” by V8 Supercars Australia.

While no further details are given in the media release, it’s expected the Swedish company will become the championship’s fifth manufacturer.

Volvo is also holding its Australian launch of the S60 Polestar, the model expected to be raced in the V8s, in Brisbane at the same time as the V8s press conference.

Japanese giant Nissan and Mercedes-Benz have already joined traditional rivals Holden and Ford in this year’s championships.

It’s expected Garry Rogers Motorsport will end its long association with Holden to team up with Volvo from next year.

Given Volvo doesn’t currently produce a V8 engine, a generic Chevrolet engine is expected to be used.

Volvo-supported S60 cars currently compete in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship and the Pirelli World Challenge in the United States.
