New South Wales skipper Paul Gallen has been ruled out of State of Origin Game 3 with a foot injury in a blow to the Blues’ hopes of ending their seven-year series losing streak against Queensland on Wednesday night.

Gallen suffered plantar fascia tissue damage in the arch of his left foot in the closing stages of NSW’s 20-point loss at Suncorp Stadium a fortnight ago.

The 31-year-old Sharks forward has not returned to the field since, and has been confined to walking in a moon boot on his left foot.

It is expected that Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods will be called in to replace Gallen.

Both Gallen and former Sharks team-mate Greg Bird have been under serious doubt, though Bird is expected to be fit.

It comes after star fullback Jarryd Hayne was unable to recover from a hamstring injury that also kept him out of Game 2.

New South Wales coach Laurie Daley is expected to speak to the media at midday to announce Gallen’s replacement, along with who will captain the side.
