The All Time XI For All Time: West Indies
Through electric bowling, dashing batting and acrobatic fielding the West Indies made themselves one of the most popular teams throughout history.
Lots of name have been thrown around for the final pace bowling spot for the Ashes. Some of the potential candidates include James Faulkner, Ben Cutting, Mitchell Johnson, James Faulkner, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chadd Sayers and even Clint McKay.
However, one player that I haven’t seen in any lists, but that I think deserves to be thought about, is Joe Mennie.
Out of the bowlers I mentioned above, only Ben Cutting has a better strike rate than Mennie.
The fact is though, that Mennie has got more wickets per game than Cutting and has got them at a lower average.
He also plays half his patch on the road that is the Adelaide Oval pitch.
If Adelaide Oval is a more bowling friendly pitch after the renovations, expect Mennie to be a complete force with the ball in the Shield.
Last Summer Mennie took 33 wickets at an average of just 22.03, and in his last three Shield matches he has taken 21 wickets. He is also showing form in the Ryobi Cup delivering nine wickets in his last four games.
Mennie is also a useful bat once getting 79 not out in a Shield game against Queensland at the Gabba.
I don’t know why no one thinks of Mennie but I believe that he should take the last bowling spot if his early Shield form is good.
