Sam Burgess handed one-match RLWC ban

England prop Sam Burgess has been handed a one-game suspension for his high tackle on Australia’s Sam Thaiday in the Rugby League World Cup opener.

The South Sydney NRL star was placed on report in England’s 28-20 loss in Cardiff on Saturday for a swinging arm that forced Thaiday off the field with concussion.

There had been calls for Burgess to be banned for the rest of the tournament over the incident, which left Thaiday in doubt for Australia’s match against Fiji in St Helens on Saturday.

But tournament officials opted for just a one-match ban on Monday and England have until 11am on Tuesday (2200 AEDT) to accept the charge or appeal.

If they accept the ban, Burgess will miss England’s second game of the tournament against Ireland at Huddersfield on Saturday.
