With Socceroos of yesterday looking like retiring sooner rather than later, it is now that we have to look to the future.

While many Australian youngsters, local and abroad, show potential, many never live up to the hype.

Here we will look at who has the potential to go all the way and become a green and gold regular.

1. Mitchell Duke
I honestly can say, after watching this boy play, that he could be the best striker to come out of Australia since the likes of Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill and Co.

He is a quality finisher with pace as shown in the Mariners season opener against WSW, with a beautiful chip of a Flores pass.

Duke also has the ability to go wide and put a low cross into the box. Has the possibility of going to Europe next year if he can make the net ripple enough in the A-League.

2. Tom Rogic
Duke and Rogic combined could be one of the most lethal attacks in Asia.

Rogic’s ability on the ball and his gift of putting balls straight past the defence would match perfectly with Duke’s deadly striking qualities.

Soon to be gaining more and more first team caps with Celtic, the god-like touch of Rogic may be the best ever to bless Australian soils.

3. Jason Geria
Geria possesses everything a great right-back would need.

A good touch, speed and the ability to tackle. Now a regular starter for Melbourne Victory, Geria might be able to fill the void at left-back if he could adapt.

Showing potential at the U20 World Cup, hopefully he will soon grab a few full international caps for Australia.

4. Joshua Brillante
By far one of the best holding midfielders in the A-League.

He has the ability to make accurate passes and can make strong tackles.

He has the great ability of making sure his team always has possession of the ball.

He can also make runs through the midfield and can create threatening attacks. Definitely a future Socceroo and European player.

5. Awer Mabil
Yeah, I didn’t think you would know this name, but he could become Australia’s best ever utility forward.

Currently playing at Adelaide United, he has the ability to cut in, pass and most importantly, shoot.

Incredibly skilled and you will be seeing him more in future seasons in the A-League and Europe. And, he is only 18.

Australia’s footballing future is promising, but we just need to harness the potential and use it in the national team to its best ability.

And, the more of these players who are playing regular first team football in Europe, the greater the rewards.

2014 may end up being a dud, but at the moment it’s all about the future for the Socceroos.
