This season has been quite a turnaround for Sydney FC following their blundering season last year, after the late arrival of Alessandro Del Piero caused the team to have late preparations and take a while to get the ball rolling.

So far this season for Sydney FC has been up and down.

Following the loss to Wellington Phoenix last week, giving the Phoenix their first win of the season, Sydney FC have lost their touch.

Frequently this season Alessandro Del Piero has been on the sideline because of injuries, and many say the team is lost without him.

Many people also come to think Sydney FC are a one man team.

Nevertheless, Sydney FC continue to play every week with passion, but many times this passion is lost, as we saw as they went down 5-2 against Brisbane Roar at the Allianz Stadium last week.

This wasn’t the first time the Sky Blues were clouded by the Roar, going down 4-0 against the side earlier in the season.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Frank Farina stated, “We were taught a football lesson, there was no hiding they were the better team, they were mobile, they moved the ball better and we couldn’t cope with it.”

This again brings up whether Sydney FC is strong enough to stay up in the top five or will they slouch down into the bottom and fail to qualify for the finals?

Although the Sky Blues have not dropped out of the top five once this season, Farina mentioned at the beginning of the season that playoffs is a priority for the squad, but what they lack is consistency.

Farina also stated after the crushing blow on Boxing Day, changes definitely needed to be made in the upcoming January transfer window.

Farina will need to make some tough decisions in order to revitalize his squad in the upcoming transfer window. He is set to make several signings but unfortunately is limited by a full squad.

One man that stuck out for Farina was golden boy Rostyn Griffiths, who played for the Central Coast Mariners from 2010 until last year, after making a 1.3 million dollar deal to make a switch to Guangzhou R and F.

Griffiths would be a dream signing for the Blues, who lack a quality defensive midfielder who can create forward plays and be a barrier in opposition attacks.

Farina will definitely have to think long and hard before making any decisions to improve the squad, but will be faced with many challenges along the road.

Already halfway through the season, Farina must think to improve on the way the team works together, making opportunities and scoring goals.

I – and I’m sure a lot of other people – are excited to find out how the rest of the season plays out for Sydney FC.
