Steven Smith made his fourth Test century on day two against the Proteas in Centurion and again he has delivered when it really mattered.

Smith was 91* not out overnight on Day 1, as he and Shaun Marsh got Australia out of trouble. His 100 included 13 boundaries but it was the way he made his 100 which was so impressive to all who watched him.

Smith pushed his way out of situations a number of times in his innings but backed his ability and confidence throughout his knock. Coming in at 4/98 he showed his leadership helping Marsh through and taking to the South African spinner Robin Peterson.

It wasn’t the fluent Steven Smith we are use to seeing, but the way he battled against the best attack in the world was impressive to watch.

After struggling early, he played Peterson with intent and was patient against the seamers. The South African bowlers continued to be tight all day but Smith’s determination and concentration was top quality, as he and Shaun Marsh put Australia in a good position on Day 1, finishing with a 233-run partnership, the highest fifth wicket partnership between South Africa and Australia at Centurion.

As he resumed day two Smith was in the 90s for nearly 70 minutes as he again pushed through to arguably his best century yet under enormous pressure.

This backs up Steven’s two centuries throughout the Ashes Series in Perth and Sydney when Australia were in trouble with the bat.

This clutch batting has also helped his chances as a possible future Test captain of the Australian team, as his performance under pressure has lifted both his reputation and the sides.

After breaking onto the scene as a bowling all-rounder, Smith has now locked up the number six position in the batting line-up, now bowling just occasionally as a part-timer.

His early reputation as just a limited overs player has now been put to rest by these clutch innings, as his uncanny technique is holding up due to his positivity and patience throughout his knocks.

As a skipper Smith has already had success with the Sixers in the Big Bash and now a very prominent figure within the leadership group at New South Wales.

Steven Smith is now reaching his potential in all assets of cricket. His performance both on and off the field is a prime example of someone who is dedicated and motivated to keep performing for his country.

After having to prove his place in the side, Smith has finally cemented his spot at number six in the batting order.

The captaincy may not go his way, but Smith has the temperament, desire and motivation to be a prominent part in the Australian team and a cult figure across world cricket.
