Blues query McLean on AFL sub reaction

Carlton have called Brock McLean to account, but have accepted his reason for staying on the bench at three-quarter time of last week’s AFL match.

The midfielder was subbed out of the match against Richmond on Thursday night at the MCG and stayed on the bench, rather than join the three-quarter time huddle.

Coach Mick Malthouse said McLean’s explanation was that was the first time he had been handed the red vest and he was unsure of the rules.

“I have not seen anyone throw a party (for) getting the red guernsey,” Malthouse told Channel Seven’s Talking Footy.

“I spoke to him about that and he had one reason – that he hadn’t been subbed before.

“This is fair, because I didn’t even know the rule … that once you put that (the vest) on, I don’t know if you’re allowed back on the ground.

“He didn’t ask anyone – that was the only sin he made.”

While the Blues accepted McLean’s explanation, Malthouse also made it clear they were unhappy.

He said it was enough discipline for McLean that they raised the matter with him.

“We would have liked him, as a leader, on the ground,” Malthouse said.

“We’ve taken issue with it and we’re not going to hide it.

“He came up with the reasoning and we have to accept that.”
