Adam Voges continues his remarkable run of form, scoring 249 against the Redbacks on Wednesday. It’s getting harder and harder for national selectors to ignore his claim for Ashes selection.

As Western Australia piled on 8/611 in response to the Redbacks’ 469 at Glenelg, their skipper Voges put on a masterful display, looking in control the whole way through his 366-ball knock.

His last five first class scores are now 249, 22*, 138*, 101 – that’s 612 runs at an astounding average of 204.

This, on the back of leading the Perth Scorchers to a second BBL title earlier this year, potentially has Voges poised to earn his first Baggy Green after twelve years of stellar performances in first class cricket and almost 10’000 runs.

He faces stiff competition though.

With the selectors looking to blood Joe Burns, ten years Voges’ junior, the veteran’s age and experience could be working against him as the powers-that-be look to find a long term solution to Australia’s middle order fragility.

Then there’s Shane Watson, a player who has the unique talent of being perennially on the brink of demotion whilst also remaining an immovable mainstay of the Australian line-up.

Indeed, the selectors seem to have endless patience with Watson but this unshakable faith is becoming less and less tenable with each passing failure.

With Michael Clarke coming back into the team, Shaun Marsh having a respectable summer and Ed Cowan also pushing for selection, Voges’ recent form is sure to create headaches for the Australian selection panel with tours in the West Indies and England coming up.
