Giant and Demons have improved beyond expectations in 2015

In an article I did before the first round I was thinking three victories would represent a win for the Demons coming into the halfway mark of the season.

Along with that, I said the Giants getting three to four wins before the halfway mark would be a good achievement for them.

Well at the moment the Giants and Demons are doing better then I, along with many others expected. The Giants are 3-1, with their loss only by 21 points to the Swans, and the Demons at 2-2, both sides are looking that they may well end up higher then I first expected.

Melbourne

So far the Dees have won against the Suns and upset the Tigersin Round 4. They could have won the other two games if they have played for all four quarters, but fitness and a lack of intensity let them down.

The first loss, against the Giants, saw them up by over 30 points at half time. Melbourne then crashed with a goalless third quarter, only adding an extra 1-5 after the halftime break.

They had the Crows on the ropes in first half of the first quarter, and kept up with them throughout the first half. Again the halfway mark proved their demise, and the Dees allowed Adelaide to push on and win by 25 points.

In all four games they have shown that they have the players and the skill to win, but they were not able to keep up with the Crows and Giants for the full four quarters. If they can start to continue their good patches for longer and later in the game, every game, they are going to be a strong contender in matches. Inevitably, this will lead to a few more wins on the board.

For the game against the Tigers I think the major difference between them was the Leaders standing up and been accountable. With Jones, Cross and Dawes showing great skill and determination they made a huge difference between the two teams.

I think now that a good result for them up to the byes is 5-7 or 4-8 with winnable games against Saints andamp; with the Cats a wounded animal there is two very winnable games and with the games against Pies and Dogs there is close games there I think and a chance to up set one of them.

GWS Giants
The Giants have started the season with three great wins against the Saints, Demons and Suns. Even counting the loss against their cross-town rivals, there is still a lot to like about that result. GWS showed that they were still extremely competitive, but just could not keep up with the Swans on the night.

They have been improving all around the ground, and one of the most impressive things I seen with them was against the Suns this week. Their transition into attack out of the backline, with some of there best goals coming from a solid defensive play, was executed with so much speed it kept catching the Suns by surprise.

For them, I think going into the break they would be happy more with a 6-6 or 9-3. with winnable games against West Coast, the Blues and Lions all coming up. Ones that could go either way, against the Crows, Dogs and Magpies also feature. There is a big chance to see them in the eight at the break or just outside.

So could we see Melbourne and/or the Giants in the finals this year? I’m unsure. It is too early to say yes to, but their supporters and the players have seen enough so far in 2015 that they can dream.
