Jonathon Ceglar: The Hawks' unsung hero

Jonathon Ceglar has shown great determination since being delisted by the Magpies and joining the Hawks in 2013.

Drafted by Collingwood as part of a trade deal with Gold Coast for the 2011 season, Ceglar spent two seasons at the Pies without playing AFL footy.

So why did the Hawks pick him up after he was dumped by the Magpies? Perhaps they liked what they saw of him in the VFL during his time with the Magpies.

His ability to take strong pack marks and go forward when needed would have been a huge plus for Hawthorn. He was also one of the VFL Magpies most reliable players.

Whatever the reason, he was picked up by Hawks and played two games in 2013 as a rookie. He was upgraded for the start of the 2014 season and added 15 games to his name, before being dropped for the grand final.

So far this year he has stepped up another level and played every game. Even with David Hale fit he has been able to keep his spot within the team.

The competition’s elite ruckmen, such as Shane Munford and Dean Cox, did not hit their prime until around 26, and stayed at this level until 33, if not older. At 24, Ceglar still has two year before he his that mark.

With Hale in his last few years, Ceglar looks prime to take up the mantle of the Hawks’ number 1 ruckman. He is leading Hale and Ben McEvoy in all of the primary statistics, except for average goals per game.

If he is able to stay fit, Jonathon Ceglar is the future of the Hawks’ ruck stock.
