Since Shane Warne’s retirement, Australia has tried a spinner from almost every state to find a replacement.
With Nathan Lyon and Fawad Ahmed both in the touring team for the upcoming Ashes series, presently the options look good.
However should something happen to either of the two, what are Australia’s other options?
Surely if a replacement was to be required it would have to be Ashton Agar. Agar is young but has experience in the Australian team, after debuting for the Aussies against England with a spectacular 98 batting at 11.
No, he didn’t go well with the ball, but since then he has claimed 31 wickets in the Sheffield Shield with an average of 30.48 and a strike rate of 61.5.
Another option is Steve O’Keefe. The mature O’Keefe played the one Test last year, but had a Shield season almost on par with Agar’s, claiming 28 wickets at an average of 23.21 and a strike rate of 61.1.
On the back of the outstanding Shield season he had, I would like to see Fawad given a chance in the second Test – let’s not forget he pretty much bowled Victoria to victory in the final, claiming 8/89. Furthermore his season stats read 48 wickets at an average of 24.85, with a strike rate of 54.2.
Nathan Lyon is doing a decent job for Australia at the moment, however there are others hot on his heels.
