There appears to be a changing of the guard behind the Australian team’s stumps with Brad Haddin reportedly losing his place to fellow New South Welshman Peter Nevill for the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.
According to Peter Lalor from The Australian, the 66-Test veteran will be replaced by Nevill following his impressive debut at Lord’s.
Haddin was forced to hand the gloves over for the second Test due to family reasons and his understudy took full advantage.
Nevill looked assured behind the crease and the stumps – scoring 45 in the first innings and taking a record seven catches on debut.
Haddin and Nevill shared keeping duties during the tourist’s drawn three-day match against Derbyshire where they scored 32 and 1, respectively.
The two are close friends and Nevill has firmly maintained throughout the series that he considered himself the backup option – but with Watson, Harris and Siddle being sidelined for various reasons this series it looks as though the Australian selectors have one eye firmly set on the future.
Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy though has thrown his support behind Haddin though, saying he believes he deserves a chance to improve upon his disappointing run of form.
“I think that’s a harsh call on Brad Haddin,” he told Fox Sports.
“I’d like him to have a chance to redeem his Cardiff performance and then maybe at the end of the series – or when he doesn’t redeem himself – then we can move to Nevill.
“But the good thing is we know our next position as a wicketkeeper is all set.”
No official announcement has been made however, but with the third Test starting on Wednesday evening, a decision will be known within the next two days.
