Does Fyfe really have the Brownlow in the bag?

Who will be taking the Brownlow Medal in 2015? Does Nat Fyfe already have it in the bag; that’s the big question in AFL circles at the moment.

He started the season on fire, up to about Round 15, but from then on he has had a week’s rest and then a couple of quieter weeks. David Mundy has been Freo’s main possession-winning midfielder for the past few games.

This has started to make me wonder if Mundy and the other midfielders have been taking votes off Fyfe throughout the year, when we thought he may have been dominating the count.

Fremantle have several super stars in their line-up who could all be polling votes and we wouldn’t even know about it. All the focus is on Fyfe.

But if it’s not him, who could it be?

Will it be a ruckman for the first time since Scott Wynd in 1992?

Paddy Dangerfield has had a super second half of the year and could really push Fyfe on the biggest night of the year. Matt Priddis is also tipped to poll well on the night in the hunt to go back to back, or could Sam Mitchell final get the medal he has come so close to so many times.

Besides Gary Ablett jnr the bookmakers favourites haven’t actually taken Charlie home. Another thing against the superstar is that recently the Brownlow Medalist hasn’t come from a top 4 side: it is normally a team who is around the seventh to 18th position, like Priddis last year or Gary Ablett jnr in 2013.

A stand out player in a average side has a good chance for the medal. The last time a player won the Brownlow Medal and also won the Premiership was Gary Ablett jnr back in 2009.

That’s what makes me think that Fyfe hasn’t won the Brownlow Medal yet, as all his performing teammates will take votes of him like Mundy, Barlow, and Mayne. It takes more then one stand out player to make a great side and win so many games like Fremantle have done this year.

If anyone can take the Medal from Fyfe, my tip would be Patrick Dangerfield from the Adelaide Football Club or Matt Priddis to go back-to-back, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since the great Robert Harvey from Saint Kilda football club in 1997 and 1998.
