Football Federation Federation has announced Chris Beath, Jarred Gillett and Ben Williams as its first full-time professional referees, signing them to A-League contracts for the next two seasons.
With FFA locked in a pay dispute with the players association, FFA CEO David Gallop stressed that limited resources had held back the move to full-time referees for a long time since the A-League started in 2005.
“The reality is that limited resources for Australian football means we have not been able to take this initiative until Season 11,” said Gallop.
“We’ll start with a panel of three, instead of a full panel of seven which would be required to cover every Hyundai A-League match.
“It’s a compromise, but its a move in the right direction.”
Establishing the three-member panel means FFA is investing a further $300,000 in the referee program across the A-League, W-League and National Youth League having spent $1.2 million last season.
