Cricket Australia has signed a three-year deal making Optus the official mobile multimedia partner of the game.

As part of the deal eligible Optus customers will be given free unlimited and more importantly unmetred access to the Cricket Australia Live pass which usually costs $29.99, allowing access all year to live cricket video and on demand highlights.

Only users in Australia will be able to access the content which for this summer includes:

* Test series featuring Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies;
* One-Day International Series featuring Australia and India;
* T20 International Series featuring Australia and India; and
* Big Bash League.

It’s not the first time Cricket Australia has held partnerships with mobile carriers with agreements dating back to the early 2000s with ‘Orange’ which became ‘3’, which then was taken over by Vodafone.

Streaming live sports content is still relatively new in the Australian sports landscape.

While Telstra has focussed on securing AFL and NRL mobile rights, Optus is hoping its focus on summer sports including the Australian Open tennis will help create a point of difference for customers thinking of making the switch.

After a deal with Vodafone expired three years ago, Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland says it was important to fill the gap.

“The cricket content on our digital properties is being consumed in record numbers,” he said.

“We’re glad that through this new partnership we can offer customers a range of exclusive content. This is a very exciting partnership for Australian cricket.”

Those who aren’t with Optus and who don’t wish to change can still access the live streaming service for an annual fee or $4.99 per day through the Cricket Australia app.

Of course when Australians aren’t on the go they’ll be able to watch for free at home on the big screen with Channel Nine and Ten having exclusive access to Internationals and Big Bash matches respectively.
