Chris Gayle has teamed up with high-profile Australian media lawyer Mark O’Brien to launch a defamation suit against Fairfax Media, following allegations he indecently exposed himself to a woman during the 2015 ODI World Cup in Australia.

“Cricketer Chris Gayle has strongly denied the allegations first published by Fairfax Media that he indecently exposed himself to a woman during last year’s World Cup in Sydney,” Gayle’s management told Fox Sports.

“Despite such denials, Fairfax Media continues to publish the false and defamatory allegations which have received widespread republication in media throughout the world.

“As a result, Chris Gayle has retained Mark O’Brien, a leading Australian media lawyer, to immediately commence defamation proceedings against Fairfax Media.”

It’s the latest development in the fallout of Gayle’s awkward, inappropriate interview with Mel McLaughlin, in which the big-hitting opener asked the Network Ten reporter on live television out for a drink, before telling her, “Don’t blush baby.”

The aggrieved woman – who did not want to be identified – told Fairfax she came forward “in support of Mel McLaughlin… and to support the many other women working as career professionals in sport who shouldn’t have to put up with this kind of treatment”.

This came after Fox Sports reporter Neroli Meadows told the ABC that Gayle was “a repeat offender” when it came to humiliating reporters.

Gayle has already copped a $10,000 fine from his club, the Melbourne Renegades, and now there are suggestions he will be banned from competing in future editions of the BBL.
