Travis Head deserves national selection

Travis Head has burst onto the Australian cricketing scene this summer.

His powerful 202 in the domestic one-day competition followed by a classy century in the Sheffield Shield to steer South Australia to victory had him labelled as a possible future prospect.

But his Big Bash play has thrown his name well and truly into contention for national selection at the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup. Head has bolted ahead of many other prospects for the national team.

He started the tournament with an unlucky 16 against the Melbourne Stars where he was wrongfully dismissed, but since then he has put on a display of power hitting.

A quick 22 in the next match saw Head hole out in the deep to Michael Carberry against the Scorchers. He followed that up with a disappointing 11 in a woeful batting performance by the strikers facing the Thunder.

New Year’s Eve saw Travis Head become a household name around Australia. His jaw-dropping 101* off 53 balls included 9 sixes and his last 45 runs came off nine balls, single handedly pulling Adelaide across the line for the win.

He hit 3 massive sixes to end the chase and win the match to complete one of the best innings ever in the Big Bash.

Tuesday night saw another composed and powerful innings from Head, being able to achieve a half century and drag a slow moving Strikers in the middle overs to a very respectable score of 174. His 51* with 3 sixes and 1 four helped to reiterate that his spectacular century wasn’t a one time thing and that he has plenty more runs to offer.

Will he be selected for the Australian squad?

Head deserves his chance and ultimately will receive it to form a formidable and threatening Australian T20 middle order.

The selection panel will have a tough time with a wealth of talent like that to choose from.
