Lionel Messi sent the football world into a spin, and this time it was for an assist rather than a spectacular goal.

Playing against Celta Vigo, Messi scored his 299th goal in his 334th La Liga appearance with a standard (sensational for everyone else) free-kick.

From that point on his Barcelona teammate, Luis Suarez ran rampant with two goals early in the second half.

Six minutes later, Barca had a penalty awarded and Messi stepped up to the spot.

With a 300th goal for Barcelona right there on a platter Messi instead passed the ball to Suarez who found the back of the net for his hat-trick.

Messi’s decision was lauded by football fans who were amazed by his desire to put the team first and give his mate a chance at a hat-trick, rather than his own personal milestone.

Barcelona went on to win the game 6-1.

Messi will get another shot for the 300 milestone on Thursday morning against Gijon.
