Following his side’s recent league results and early exit from Champions League, Louis van Gaal has admitted his position at Old Trafford is under threat.

How can one describe United at present? The team with more back passes, the team with more possession, but not the team with attractive goals.

This United team lacks quality inside the final third, with none of their strikers having scored more than ten Premier League goals.

When David Moyes was in charge, part of the crowd at the Stretford end abused him when United lost to Liverpool. But Van Gaal is getting this kind of response week after week. After spending nearly €300 million, he is more concerned by the strength of the opponents than his own team.

Moyes experienced the glare of the spotlight at United for himself and he admits it is an uncomfortable place to be if the team is underperforming.

So what’s next for United? Who is going to take van Gaal’s place?

Ryan Giggs is the right choice to replace the Dutchman, and was in charge of United’s final few games when Moyes was sacked.

Having had a great experience under Sir Alex Ferguson, playing an attractive, attacking style of football, Giggs would be fuming at the way Manchester United are playing right now. He obviously has the vision to bring a new dimension of attacking play and creating chances, knows the team more than anyone, and is the man to get the best out of the playing 11.

The team is hungry, the fans are hungry, the assistant manager is hungry, it seems only the manager has a small appetite.

But the board feels the Welshman is too inexperienced. There are rumours that Jose Mourinho, who was fired by Chelsea earlier this season, could be drafted into the hot seat.

The Portuguese is far more experienced than the Welshman, but is it right to appoint a coach who was fired by a rival club?

United are six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, and their Champions League berth is uncertain. If the board decides to offer Mourinho the job, then Giggs’ position will be under scrutiny, because the Welshman will not be interested in assisting for another three years.
