Is Pakistan's problem a lack of vision or dearth of talent?

Pakistan are known for producing exceptional cricket talent and capricious performances on the field.

There are many problems with players and the administrative structure, even though Pakistan has produced many greats of the game.

In the last decade and a half, Pakistan’s performances on and off the field have been poor. A lack of home cricket is often used as vindication for such ordinary performances, as is not producing enough talent to compete.

But South Africa were not allowed to play cricket for more than two decades, yet have been competitive since their rebirth.

Apart from administrative structure, which is contaminated with political influence, Pakistan have not had a good captain in 15 or so years. After the retirement of Inzimam ul Haq, there were too many changes of command, and none possessed the core attributes of a captain.

Misbah-ul-Haq had an extended run but could not develop world-class players capable of leading in the future. This happens when the leader is only playing to save his own skin.

The role of a cricket captain is more significant than any other team sports, as he is not only in charge of tactical strategy but fostering and developing the players under his command.

The difference between a successful captain and great captain is what he left when he signed off. Therefore cricket pundits rate Sourav Ganguly and Steve Waugh ahead of MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting.

Pakistan is behind the time in cricket. During the last decade, Pakistan’s ill-equipped batting lineup barred the administrators from producing supporting decks.

Cricket grounds in Pakistan have not seen international cricket since the brutal attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009. We should have used this time more appropriately.

Pakistan should break new grounds to develop young players, with cricket being played all around the world thanks to T20 leagues. After identifying talent, Pakistan should facilitate them to play in the Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League Cricket, County Cricket and Ram Slam T20 league, and have an ample chance to play with international stars instead of pleading for a short series with archrivals.
