Australians will be without an artistic gymnastics team to barrack for at this year’s Olympics, after the team fell just short of qualifying during the test event in Rio de Janeiro on Monday morning (AEDT).

Rio will be the first Olympics since Seoul, 1988, where Australia isn’t represented in the event.

Consistently a top-ten team in the world, Australia has had to deal with a host of injuries in recent times. Lauren Mitchell was hit by a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, and the team finished 14th at the World Championships in Glasgow last year. As a result, they required a top-four finish at the test event in Rio to qualify for the Olympics in August.

There were promising signs for the Aussies at the Pacific Rim Championships in the United States a week before the start of the test event, with Larrissa Miller picking up an individual silver medal, and the team taking home bronze.

However, the Australians fell short in Rio, finishing in fifth spot on 218.428 points. France, who came fourth, were more than two points ahead, with 220.869.

Aussie gymnastics fans will still have someone to cheer for during the Olympics; an individual gymnast, to be decided at the national championships next month in Melbourne, will represent Australia.
