The Jaguares have the perfect chance to finish off their debut Super Rugby season with a win when they face a second-string Lions side in Buenos Aires. Join The Roar for live scores from the match, starting from 7:40am (AEST).

The Lions, having already locked in a finals spot last week, made the bold decision on this occasion to rest their regular side at home rather than send them on the trip to South America, and give them the best chance of hitting the finals fresh and in good health.

Unfortunately for the Lions, this roll of the dice has already gone awry to some degree. The Hurricanes’ big win over the Crusaders has seen them take top spot and this Lions side will now need to win on foreign soil if the franchise is to finish on top of the table.

They still won’t finish any lower in second but the clear path to a home final as well as the general pride of having finished at the very top are things they would certainly like to have, but are now putting in serious risk.

It’s a great result for the Jaguares though. What has been a disappointing debut season for them – resulting in just three wins to date – could end on a significant high with a win on home soil, even if it is against a team of seconds.

That’s not to say the Lions couldn’t pull off a win here but it certainly looks unlikely. There’ll be a lot of players a bit out of their depth and a lack of the sort of cohesion you’d get from a side that plays together every week.

Prediction
Expect the Jaguares to win this one, and no doubt questions to be asked in the weeks to come about whether or not the Lions made the right call.

Jaguares by 8.
