Five reasons Round 19 of the AFL was a train-wreck

For a weekend of football that had so much hype going in, Round 19 of the 2016 AFL season was nothing more than a train-wreck.

Don’t get me wrong, the copious number of player milestones were a highlight and to the following major achievements I tip my hat to you:

Brent Harvey – Game 427 and the all-time games record holder for the VFL/AFL.
Matthew Pavlich – 350 games for the Fremantle Football Club.
Corey Enright – Game 326 and the highest games tally for the Geelong Football Club.
Jimmy Bartel – Game 300 for the Geelong Football Club.

But let’s not beat around the bush. The quality of football played in five of the nine games was embarrassing and contributed to the worst round of footy in recent memory.

It started with the pathetic, soulless performance by the Richmond Football Club where they scored a futile total of 23 points for the game against GWS in perfect conditions.

Richmond should scrap the Tigers and replace it with the ‘Coachkillers’ as their performance has once again put Damien Hardwick in the sights of those who want him sacked.

Politicians weren’t the only think that stunk in Canberra on the weekend.

The 94-point slaughter Brisbane experienced against Port Adelaide made Justin Leppitsch’s odds for the first coached sacked even shorter (I didn’t think that would have been possible).

It looked as if the players who want out of the Lions put their cue in the rack and started playing for self-preservation.

I am not certain that Justin is the right man for the top job but I do know that if he does get the chop, there are quite a number of Lions players that deserve the boot as well.

On paper, you would look at the two-point, after the siren win that Melbourne had against Gold Coast and though it must have been a belter watch.

I call bulldust. The error-ridden match between the two teams made the half-time Auskickers look like masters of Australian Rules football.

The skills on display were so laughably poor that at one stage Jason Dunstall stated “I now understand why Melbourne supporters go to the snow” while commentating the snooze fest. I almost threw my phone it was that bad.

You would have thought having an all-time great of the club play his 350th game would be reason enough for the Fremantle players to run through a brick wall and do anything for Pav.

Wrong! Once again the Dockers we more like Shockers as Sydney pumped them to the tune of 90 points, at home in Perth mind you.

This once mighty team is showing less effort and respect than a Ross Lyon press conference and how they have dropped so far, so quickly is astounding.

Finally, the season from hell for the Bombers continued as they suffered an 82-point shellacking at the hands of the Crows.

I will admit that the Bombers players are having a crack unlike other teams mentioned above but they have been a blight on the competition all year, except for their only win in Round 2 against the Demons.

They were no match for the Crows and this game would have been a channel-changer without a doubt.

I bloody hope that I am not back here saying the same thing about Round 20!
