The USA has have a good time at the swimming meet on Day 2 of the 2016 Olympics, taking home two gold medals, including a world record to Katie Ledecky.

Australia’s men won bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay, with Cameron McEvoy recording a split of 47 second flat to pip the Russian team for third.

France were second and the USA won the gold, giving Michael Phelps a remarkable 19th Olympic gold medal.

In other finals, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden finally claimed her first Olympic gold in the 100m butterfly event where she has been so dominant in the past few years. Emma McKeon did not feature among the medals.

But the standout performances were from the 19-year-old superstar Ledecky, who broke her own world record again to win gold in the women’s 400m freestyle, and Adam Peaty who was first in the 100m final, again breaking his won world record.

Ledecky swamped the field, streaking ahead by several bodylengths to win her race, while Peaty was a class above, going well ahead of his world record pace.

For Australia’s men it was a case of too little, too late. Cam McEvoy was promising in the anchor leg of the relay, but in the first and third legs swum by James Roberts and James Magnussen Australia dropped too far behind to ever really threaten the Americans.

It gave Michael Phelps his 19th gold medal, simply a remarkable achievement for the best swimmer of all time.

A major bright spot for Australia was the performance of 18-year-old Kyle Chalmers, who made up plenty of ground to put Australia within striking distance in second after swimming the second leg.

In the semi-finals today, Mitch Larkin finished second in his semi of the 100m backstroke. Madison Wilson and pre-Games favourite Emily Seebohm finished first and third respectively in the same race to qualify fourth and seventh fastest for the final.

So while there might have been no gold for Australia, it was a great day in the pool. Here are the full swimming results from Day 2 of the Olympics.
