Germany will be the heavy favourites to make the gold medal match of the 2016 Rio Olympics when they take on Nigeria. Join The Roar from 5am AEST for live scores and commentary.

After being held to draws with Mexico and South Korea in their first two group games, Germany went on to destroy Fiji 10-nil.

That goal scoring form followed them into the quarter-finals, as the 2014 World Cup winners dismantled the 2016 Euro winners Portugal 4-nil (granted it’s not the team with Ronaldo in it) with ease.

The Germans now have a chance to be guaranteed an Olympic medal, and they will be expected to make the final by most pundits in the football world, opening up as big favourites over Nigeria.

Despite their attack being the best in the competition, Germany’s defence has been lacking. They have managed to keep a clean sheet in their last two games, but after conceding five in their first two, the back line will be eagerly watched.

After cruising past Denmark 2-nil in the quarter-finals, Nigeria proved that they well and truly belong at the top of the game.

Nigeria suffered just the one loss in the group stages, going down 2-nil to Columbia, but managed to take down Japan 5-4 in at thrilling affair, before shutting out Sweden en route to a 1-nil win.

Prediction
On paper, Germany are too good for Nigeria all over the pitch. There’s absolutely nothing in the form books pointing to the fact that Nigeria can win this game. Though as we’ve seen in other sports during this Olympic Games, anything can happen at this level.

If Germany can remain tight in defence and not make any uncharacteristic mistakes, they should make the Olympic final.

Germany 2 – 0 Nigeria
