No fourpeat for the Hawks, but let's not forget...

No, the Hawks didn’t win the fourpeat. But lest we be branded as a bunch of greedy, arrogant jerks who have lost touch with reality, let’s remember that in the Alastair Clarkson era…

We got to win flags with Lance Franklin and Cyril Rioli – the two most exciting players of their generation – on the same team, and what a show that was.

Luke Hodge has been vindicated for being picked #1 ahead of Chris ‘The Golden Child’ Judd, winning two Norm Smith medals and four AFL premierships, captaining three.

The little slow guy, Sammy Mitchell, who spent his first two seasons playing at Box Hill, has captained a premiership side and played in three others.

Discarded Port champion Shaun Burgoyne and his wonky knee won three more flags.

Most importantly, think of all Jarryd Roughead is going through this year, and he, the lanky kid from Leongatha, is a four-time premiership player. Remember that, and keep him in your thoughts, for he is facing issues bigger than a football game.

We are the only club with two dual Norm Smith medallists! We’re so damn good they have created a new finals medal to be awarded to the best player in the finals, named after our first dual Norm Smith medallist, Gary Ayers!

And I didn’t even mention the Leigh Matthews Award, remember which club he played for?!

We are amazing as a team, organisation, and fan-base. In my lifetime we have won 12 of our 13 flags and played in 17 of our 19 grand finals! That, my friends, is a level of success in the modern sports arena that borders on obscene!

What other team has been that awesome in the last 50 years? Don’t sook because we lost, savour all that we have won!

Hopefully this will see the end of the jealous hatred, no more ‘free kick Hawthorn’ garbage, no more booing our champion players, because now their reign is over and the jealousy can (hopefully) subside.

Last year a neutral fan told me, “Nobody hates Hawthorn, we all still hate Collingwood, we’re just sick of watching Hawthorn win all of the time.” This year it felt like that changed, people hated Hawthorn because of our success.

Footscray fans have more right to hate us than most, the last time they were in a grand final was 1961 and we beat them to win our first flag. I shook hands with some Bulldogs supporters as I left the MCG last Friday and told them I hope they go all the way this year. They were gracious in return, because I think they were still in shock.

The footy world still expects Hawthorn to win in the finals and although many are pleased we are out, some struggled to believe it on Friday night.
