“There’s a rumour going around that you can’t win from pole,” said Whincup after the result.

“But I believe it is the best place to be.”

The result will give Whincup a great chance to win Bathurst for the fifth time.

Whincup won the shootout with a time just .06 seconds faster than second-placed Scott McLaughlin.

McLauglin was disappointed to lose pole position by such a narrow margin.

“It is pole position at Bathurst – it means everything,” he said.

“I gave it my all. One day it will happen.”

Chaz Mostert – who missed last year’s race after crashing during the preparations – rounded out the top three.

“It’s special to be out there in qualifying and have that great support from the fans in my comeback from last year,” Mostert said.

“Even the marshals up there (in the section where he crashed last year) gave me the thumbs up during the warm-up.

“That’s what makes this place so special.”

The result means the starting grid has been finalised for tomorrow’s race, the 56th edition of the Bathurst 1000.
