Socceroos defender Matthew Spiranovic should consider a move away from current club Hangzhou Greentown.

Spiranovic has made 24 appearances for Hangzhou this season, including a tenure as the team’s captain, but the Chinese squad was been relegated to the country’s second division, which will hinder his chances of future Socceroos action.

Though Matthew’s contract runs until the end of 2017, he could either be released from it or secure a transfer away.

The Australian has previously played in Europe for 1. FC Nürnberg, and another move overseas, possibly to Europe, must be considered a possibility. Spiranovic holds a UK passport and has Croatian heritage, which means – at least for the time being, pending any further effects of Brexit – he is eligible to play in Europe without taking up a non-EU position.

A stay in China is possible, but the former Melbourne Victory youth player would surely be tempted by an overseas offer. A return to Europe must be high on his list, particularly as he reaches the peak of his playing powers.

Several A-League clubs may also be interested in luring home the 28-year-old, who played two seasons with the Western Sydney Wanderers and was part of their successful 2014 Asian champions league campaign.

As the Socceroos’ preferred defensive partner to Trent Sainsbury it is vital Spiranovic plays regularly at a high level to keep himself in form, particularly with the likes of Bailey Wright and Milos Degenek breathing down his neck for selection.

Spiranovic is currently in Melbourne, his immediate focus on Australia’s upcoming match against Thailand, but undoubtedly he’ll be pondering his next move carefully knowing regular game time is critical to his future with the Socceroos.
