The first three games of Round 2 were not only notable for the goal-kicking efforts of Tom Lynch (Gold Coast) (8), Ben Brown (North Melbourne) (6), Dustin Martin (Richmond) (5) and Josh Jenkins (Adelaide) (5), but also the non-goal-kicking efforts of two of the AFL top 100 goal kickers, Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) and Eddie Betts (Adelaide).

While Riewoldt bagged four goals in Round 1, it was the second round in a row without a goal for Eddie Betts. With Josh Kennedy (West Coast Eagles) missing through injury again, there was no movement in the AFL all-time goal-kicking list through games one to three of the round. At club level the three Adelaide top 100 goal kickers that scored goals Jenkins (5), Taylor Walker (4) and Rory Sloane (2) failed to improve their ranking.

At Richmond Dusty Martin’s five goals took him past John ‘Swooper’ Northey and into 23rd place. Northey played a significant role in two Richmond premierships (1967 and 1969) but he is better known for his coaching career, which covered five AFL clubs and 315 games but no premierships.

The only other Richmond top 100 goal-scorer to register a major was Shane Edwards, whose one goal took him past Jack Baggott and level with Matthew Knights. Baggott played for the club between 1927 and 1935 and then left to become captain-coach of Essendon and later coached South Melbourne.

Knights was a two-time best and fairest at the club, and captained the side from 1997 to 2000 and later also coached Essendon.

Friday’s game between North Melbourne and St Kilda saw a big goal-kicking effort from the current club leading goal-kicker Ben Brown, whose six goals saw him move ahead of Leigh Harding and into 31st position on North Melbourne’s top 100 goal-kickers list.

Harding played at the club from 2001 to 2010 and topped the club’s goal-kicking list on one occasion despite being a small crumbing forward. Fellow top 100 goal-scorer Jarrod Waite scored one goal, while St Kilda’s Jack Steven caught up to Ian Rowland, who played at the club between 1960 and 1966, winning the goal-kicking tally in 1961 but being dropped from the winning 1966 grand final team.

In the other game Marc Murphy (Carlton) scored one goal and Tom Lynch (Gold Coast Suns) increased his significant lead as the club’s greatest ever goal-scorer.
