The three Sunday games of Round 9 saw a 100+ point thrashing of Carlton, a major upset by Brisbane and a dominant second half by the Eagles.

Carlton only managed to score seven goals and debutant Pat Kerr did not score any. Of the seven goals, only one was scored by Carlton’s few current day top 100 goal scorers and that was by captain Marc Murphy.

However, it was enough to see him continue his slow ascent up the goal scoring ladder as it took him to level with ex-ruckman Justin Madden, 1930s talented centreman/rover from WA Ron “Socks” Cooper and former coach Ken Sheldon who was recruited from Mitiamo (my former hometown).

On the other hand, Melbourne scored 21 goals and not one of those was by a top 100 goal kicker at the club. Tom McDonald and Alex Neil-Bullen scored four goals and Jake Melksham five. From a games played perspective, Neville Jetta needs only to take the field twice more to become the third current Melbourne player to reach top 100 status – a sign of a maturing football team.

Hawthorn star full forward (and captain) Jarryd Roughead, despite kicking two goals, failed to catch Eddie Betts and reclaim the 48th spot on the AFL top 100 goal kickers.

Betts kicked four goals for Adelaide on Friday night to move three goals ahead of Roughead. Jack Gunston (four goals) and Isaac Smith (two goals) were other Hawthorn top 100 goal scorers.

For Brisbane, Eric Hipwood (four goals) continues to move up the goal scoring ranks, this week passing Des Headland, Jack Redden and James Polkinghorne and drawing level with Jamie Charman. Matt Eagles (Brisbane) and James Worpel (Hawthorn) kicked their first goal in AFL football, and Mitch Lewis made his debut as a player.

The final game of the round saw West Coast Eagles leave Richmond in their wake after halftime in the battle of the leaders. Jack Darling’s six goals saw him overshadow the club’s all-time No 1 goal scorer, Josh Kennedy.

Kennedy’s three goals saw him draw level with Essendon legend John Coleman who now sits just outside of the top 50 AFL goal kickers of all time. Mark LeCras took the time to score three goals and whisk him ahead of Melbourne’s Gary Lyon and into 87th position on the AFL all-time top 100 goal scorers.

Gary Lyon was the man who did it all at Melbourne. Recruited from Kyabram in 1986, he made the state side in 1988, played for Victoria nine times and was chosen as an all-Australian in 1993, 1994 and 1995. He was the leading goalkicker at the Demons in 1994 and 1995 and best and fairest in 1990 and 1994.

He retired in 1999, having played 226 games. He now works in the media.

Jack Riewoldt scored five goals in a losing side and this took him past former Western Bulldog star and crowd favourite Brad Johnson. He also drew level with Paul Salmon. “Fish” as he was (not surprisingly) known won Essendon’s goalkicking in his first year despite missing the last half of the season through injury.

After 209 games for the Bombers, he moved to Hawthorn where he played 100 games before returning to the Bombers for one more season of 15 games and 11 goals.
