With the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicking off in Russia on Friday, June 15 at 1am (AEST), let’s have a look at the fixture of European superpowers Spain. The Roar is here with a handy guide containing Spain’s matches, opponents, venues and kick-off times (in the Australian timezone), as well as what their road to the final might look like.

Traditionally considered a powerhouse nation who choked in the World Cup, Spain finally reached the summit in 2010 with a thrilling extra-time win over the Netherlands in South Africa. Their title defence last tournament was poor, however, with the Spaniards failing to leave the group stage after a shock loss to Chile.

Spain enter the World Cup ranked eighth, and are always a force to be reckoned with on the international stage. They’ll have their work cut out for them against local rivals Portugal in the group stage, however.

2018 FIFA World Cup Draw – Spain

Game No. Date Time Match Venue Broadcast
4 Sat 16 Jun 4:00 AM Portugal vs Spain Fisht Stadium SBS, Optus Sport
20 Thu 21 Jun 4:00 AM Iran vs Spain Kazan Arena Optus Sport

Spain’s first match is a mouth-watering clash against their Iberian Peninsula neighbours Portugal.

That match will likely be the decider as to who triumphs in Group B, with the Spaniards to enter their other group matches against Iran and Morocco as heavy favourites.

Looking ahead to the full World Cup fixture is where things get intriguing.

A second-place finish in the group would set them up for a Round of 16 clash with heavy Group A favourites Uruguay, whereas finishing the group stage in first would set up a considerably softer matchup with Egypt, or the hosts in Russia.

From there, tantalising quarter-final and semi-final possibilities arise, including a France-Spain showdown, or a Ronaldo vs Messi bout should they face Argentina.

The Roar will have live blogs for all World Cup matches, as well as all the latest news, analysis and opinion over the course of the entire tournament.
