It’s do-or-die for last year’s runners-up, as Hawthorn hosts a struggling Adelaide Crows at the ‘G on a Saturday night. Join The Roar for live commentary and scores from 7:25pm AEST.
I’m well aware that by the time this game kicks off, the Socceroos will be running out against the French in Russia.
Needless to say, it’s probably fitting that a match that could’ve been so, so good has been crueled by the Hawks on and off again form, and the Crows who have almost entirely collapsed from their peak form.
Nevertheless, there’s footy to play, and four points to grab. The Hawks have been reasonable this year, winning a stack of matches in the first nine or so rounds, before falling short the past three weeks (including a stinker against Brisbane) and then recovering with a narrow win over Port Adelaide. On and off again, evidently.
The Crows – well, they’ve stunk. It’s difficult to ignore their substantial injury crisis, but a close loss to Fremantle last weekend send them into genuine panic stations.
Lose today, and they’ll be on a four-week losing streak ahead of the bye and encounters against the Eagles, Tigers and Cats. Not a good situation, then.
Speaking of the Crows’ injury crisis – they lost another player in Luke Brown last weekend, and Don Pyke has reacted in selection.
Brown is out, and Lachlan Murphy, Lachie Fogarty and Cam Ellis-Yolmen are all omitted. Jordan Gallucci, Andy Otten, Kyle Cheney, and first-gamer Patrick Wilson are all in.
The Hawks, for their part, have made one change. Will Langford returns to the squad in the place of Tim O’Brien.
Prediction
The Crows injury crisis, Hawthorn’s home ground advantage and the Hawks’ largely better form all have me leaning towards the home team.
In all honestly, a tip for the Crows is a little too absurd. Hawthorn will win, and probably blow out the score a bit in the later stages.
Hawthorn by 33 points
