We will make a decision this week, sometime, maybe...

Ah, rugby league…

Either the soap opera that never has an ending, or the circus that always manages to find a new and entertaining act.

This month’s episode has been centred around player behaviour and whether the boys should be sent home early or allowed to continue playing with their friends.

The fascination with this month’s episode is the inability of the game’s leaders to make a definitive call on the action that should be taken.

The main players in this real-life drama (or debacle) are the board of the Australian rugby league, the CEO of the NRL and the numerous and endless media writers who continue to offer an opinion.

Both the board of the rugby league and the CEO of the NRL (whom the board employ to direct the show) seem to have opposite opinions on what action should be taken. So much so that both the chairman and CEO seem to have been running election-style campaigns around the stance that should be taken.

Meanwhile, every half decent opinion provider has taken up countless words to state their view on what decision should be taken. Throw into the mix the fact that the players union seem to either want to remain at the status quo or if any change does occur they be in control of it, and you’ve got both one hell of a show and one hell of a mess.

The problem here seems to lie in the true inability of the senior executive to make a decision.

There is no doubt that there are details around the decision that should be considered. Not least the fact that the statement of evidence that was publicly reported does seem to have caused firm opinions on this decision to be formed on the basis of information that is open to being contested.

But still, when it comes down to it, a decision on these behavioural matters should have been made in the weeks prior to this Thursday’s meeting.

A true leader should have stepped up by now and told us in which direction we were to head. But in true soap opera style, this direction will remain open until the decision is made sometime later this week….maybe.
