Oh, big week of football. One major upset, a few major disappointments, plenty of change in the rankings. Enjoy.

1.Geelong

Last week: 1

Some will criticise it, but the Cats can dominate – and win – games in ten-minute bursts. They’re now two games clear, but the Cats don’t seem to be in any hurry to slow down. Good to see their best in fine form, too. Tom Hawkins and Patrick Dangerfield were both integral in that clash.

2.West Coast

Last week: 4

It’s tough to argue West Coast aren’t a premiership contender when the Eagles prove they’re still one of the best. A forward line that can fire and a midfield that can eviscerate, this is a very good team.

3.GWS Giants

Last week: 3

No shame in having a surprisingly competitive beginning to a clash against the Suns – most teams are doing so – but a super powerful finish garnered some important percentage.

4.Collingwood

Last week: 2

Bucks succinctly summed it up with his blunt comment that “we didn’t deserve to win that game”. The Pies have looked a little weak for a while, and Saturday’s loss might just be the reset they needed to have.

5.Brisbane Lions

Last week: 6

Weathered a damning opening term, steadied and dominated the rest of the game in front of a big Saturday night crowd. Brisbane’s almost locked in for finals now. How high can they aim?

6.Richmond

Last week: 5

Oh, no. That wasn’t too pretty. Nothing short of a massive game next week against the Cats, and if I were to make an early prediction, they’re not winning that clash.

7.Fremantle

Last week: 10

Their last two weeks may very well set them up for finals. Hugely important win, and they have a good suite of games coming up. Port, Melbourne and Carlton await after the bye. It’s possible the Dockers go 3-0 in that lot. This being Freo, though, they’ll drop one somewhere.

8.Port Adelaide

Last week: 9

A lot has been made of team’s inaccuracy this year, but Port’s 22.7 scoreline was phenomenal. A masterclass in Shanghai, but time to back it up. Freo in Perth awaits, and I’m deeply excited for that clash in two weeks’ time.

9.Adelaide

Last week: 7

They Steven Bradbury-ed their way to the top. Some dogged efforts and an inept opposition saw them snatch the win. They’ll take it no matter what, though. GWS, Richmond and Geelong up next – a very hard few rounds that will make or break their season.

10.Essendon

Last week: 13

No one’s going to remember this game by next week, but a win is a win. Essendon are in an odd position wherein they are not too far off the eight, but they still look a long way off the eight. They’re playing a lot more cohesively, but still look fragile.

11.Hawthorn

Last week: 8

The first term displayed some of their best footy. The remainder of the game displayed the considerable way the team has to go to return to being a genuine finals contender. Alastair Clarkson’s now been bested by former protege Chris Fagan three times in a row. Ouch.

12.North Melbourne

Last week: 14

Maybe they should sack their coach every week? A stunning introduction to coaching for Rhyce Shaw, and a great win for the Kangas.

13.St Kilda

Last week: 11

I was hoping they’d pull off a big scalp in China, but they barely had a sniff. Terrible performance, made even worse given Jarryn Geary has potentially suffered a serious leg injury upon return from another serious leg injury. Footy sucks sometimes.

14.Western Bulldogs

Last week: 12

One of the most inconsistent teams in the game delivered a thoroughly inconsistent performance. Inaccurate yet courageous early, poor late. The Bulldogs once looked a finals hope, but they’re a possible bottom-four contender if they don’t find the wins soon.

15.Sydney Swans

Last week: 16

Sydney tend to have a freakish ability to prevail in Geelong, and whilst they started well, they were overrun. Not a particular surprise, and they’ll still be encouraged by their effort, but they couldn’t garner the four points.

16.Gold Coast

Last week: 15

I will admit to thoroughly enjoying the positive attitude around the club nowadays, particularly with a trio of integral players re-signing during the week. Saturday’s loss was a disappointing moment, though.

17.Melbourne

Last week: 17

Do not blame young Sam Weideman for this loss. He missed the final shot at goal, yes, but a deplorable 1.8 scoreline in the final quarter lost the game for the Demons. They should never have lost that game.

18.Carlton

Last week: 18

I’m writing this one before the game even finishes. Clashes against Essendon have a weird reputation for being surprise wins, but not this time. Carlton are in a deeper hole than I’ve seen a team in for a while, and I’m not sure how they solve it.
