Here’s what I learned from Round 3 of the AFL season.

Carlton quick start but slow finishers
Carlton’s win on Saturday night was a shock to the system but was great to watch for three quarters. Carlton finally defeated the critics by having a fast start.

They roared out of the blocks against the Cats which helped them build an impressive 42-point lead midway through the third quarter against Geelong.

Carlton’s last quarter was their first quarter against Melbourne.

The Cats dominated every part of the game but this time the Blues were leading and with the clock running down the Cats could not find the answer. Gary Ablett Jr missed a shot which could have seen a great escape from the Cats but was not to be.

Eddie Betts should get three votes for Brownlow. He managed to turn back the clock with a great display with kicking two goals, seven score involvements and 12 disposals including Betts crucial match-saving tackle in the dire moments of the last quarter.

In addition to this, Patrick Cripps starred with 24 disposals and two goals. Jack Martin was impressive again with 18 disposals.

Carlton first three quarters are their blueprint for the 2020 season and will need to work on running out games in the future, but until then it was a great win for the blues.

The Rumble in the Jungle live up to its name
It was a scrappy match which suited the Bulldog style. With the man of the moment, Marcus Bontempelli, stepping up with a goal and 16 touches, the Dogs looked good.

If this is a starter for something bigger for the Dogs then they must show it next week or the ‘rumble in the jungle’ was all in vain.

Alarms bells will be ringing for the Crows
I think Mark Ricciuto should quiet down for a bit with Mitch McGovern showing his full worth on Saturday night for the Blues – on top of Alex Keath on Friday night for the Dogs.

The Crows were happily trampled by a hungrier team in the Gold Coast Suns. The Suns continue to be the feel-good story of the year.

The Crows were flat and never look they were in the contest – not to mention in the game.

COVID 19 pokes its head again and questions the integrity of the league
Poor Gillon McLachlan. Just when it seemed like everything was working to plan, it has not worked.

On Saturday afternoon, we heard that Essendon player Connor McKenna has tested positive to COVID 19.

I felt sorry for Gil. He has worked hard.

I also feel bad for McKenna who follows protocols every step of the way but was unfortunately undone. For the people picking on Essendon, I would have a hard look yourself and just realise this issue is a worldwide problem.
