There are two meetings to look at this Wednesday night, with Melton and Bathurst getting my attention. Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Melton

Best bet: Race 3, Number 1, Everybodyluvskenny
Two-year-old trotting events, especially from the stand, are fraught with danger from a betting perspective. But this guy looked well above average in trials leading into his debut at Bendigo where he was favourite. He galloped away and lost all chance. If he brings his trial form to the races, he wins.

Next best: Race 8, Number 2, Night Spirit
This four-year-old does need things to fall into place, and the map looks like it will fall into place for him. This horse closed off strongly from a trailing draw at Kilmore last start when second. This horse has drawn the front row this time around. He finds the front, where he races best, and should prove very hard to get past.

Value: Race 11, Number 1, Major Mischief
This is more of a 1×3 speck at big odds. Forget he went around fresh at Wedderburn. This horse just didn’t handle the tight track. This horse raced here last time out and ran a much better race when a close-up fourth. This horse should do no work from the pole and could run a cheeky race at a likely decent price.

Bathurst

Best bet: Race 2, Number 7, My Buzz Lightning
This horse is short but should be sweet. This horse is a very talented three-year-old that was an impressive first-up winner here before contesting a NSW derby heat at Menangle when outclassed. This horse is much better suited here and with good gate speed, should find the front comfortably and take a power of beating.

Next best: Race 7, Number 1, Come On Sloppy
He didn’t really fire on debut, but keep in mind he was drawn wide and did a bit wrong, which is understandable for start one. This horse trialled well prior to the debut and has drawn the pole. He has shown enough gate speed at the trials to hold a forward spot this time around and can easily bounce back.

Value: Race 1, Number 9, Limbo Larry
Hopefully things fall into place. This horse has drawn inside the second row. He follows out a fast beginner who could well hold the front. Should that be the case, Limbo Larry lands box seat and will be dangerous. Forget he went around last start. This horse just had far too much to do. This horse is racing well and will be hard to hold out.
