The 163rd Melbourne Cup will be run and won at Flemington this afternoon, with the 24 runners seeking a share of the $8 million prize pool. Join The Roar for live updates and commentary of the race that stops the nation from 3pm (AEDT).

The Melbourne Cup will once again have people right across Australia gripped to the action at Flemington throughout the day and well and truly primed for the big race.

Gold Trip returns for another crack at glory after triumphing last year, yet will be challenged by what looks likely to be a firm track and a host of quality runners set to throw down the gauntlet. Caufield Cup winner Without a Fight will love the firm ground and will be a front runner barring any bad luck.

Barrier 3 suits Vauban and he looks the likely favourite, whilst Zac Purton will be hopeful that Absurde can show some improvement from his recent defeat to Vauban. Former winner and eight–year-old Vow and Declare is not without a hope and Ashrun has form in this race from 2020 and could surprise a few with a bold run.

Chris Waller can never be ignored and Sheraz might just be hitting form at the right time and Lastotchka could well have a decent run based on the fact that she will carry just 51kg. There is some track talk around Serpentine for the Waterhouse/Bott stable, with the gelding having done nothing wrong in recent starts and looking a better chance than stablemate Military Mission.

Japanese stayer Breakup might well be the one to shock the top liners this afternoon and the race does look an open affair, despite a number of roughies and horses towards the bottom of the field that look to be seriously outclassed.

Prediction

Good luck with your investments for the Cup and be sure to gamble responsibly. For what it is worth, Vauban looks a clear winner from my perspective, with Without a Fight, Gold Trip, Absurde and Breakup likely to be in the picture at the clocktower in the final straight.
