The Australian women’s rugby sevens team are back in action tonight in the Olympic quarter-final against Fiji.

While the Australians started out the competition in the best possible manner, dismantling their Japanese opponents 48-0 to take command of Pool C, they have sputtered their way into tonight’s quarter-final clash.

The Aussies were given an initial scare in their second pool match against China, as they conceded an early try to Feifei Yang in the corner and showed some defensive weaknesses.

They also let in a late try in the final play of that game – a breakaway, a lethal fend, a great show of character from the Chinese outfit.

Although they came away with the 26-10 victory, the bulwark that held them in good stead in Rio looked crumbly.

The reigning gold-medallists then suffered a shock upset loss to the USA, who topped the pool after beating the Aussies 14-12.

Despite holding a first half-lead courtesy of Sharni Williams and a 12-point margin with five minutes remaining, some tired defence let America’s Cheta Emba through, before careless passing ultimately saw their demise with another Eagles try.

The Australians will have to put all that behind them, as well as the bad omen that the men’s side went down to Fiji at the same stage of the competition.
