Round 2 was an enjoyable one to select the team of the week from, as once again there was a combination of outstanding football being played, while other games were ordinary.
The A-League team of the week for Round 2 was still full of high-quality players:
Formation 3-5-2
Goalkeeper: Michael Weier (Newcastle Jets)- Michael Weier had a good game as he only conceded a goal from a penalty awarded to the Perth Glory. He made some important saves look easy and his distribution was impeccable.
Centre Back: Scott Jamieson (Melbourne City)- Scott Jamieson passed the ball around accurately and helped Melbourne City completely dominated the first half, as Brisbane Roar failed to create clear cut chances. He led the team well and did a good job in the centre of defence.
Centre Back: Tomislav Mrcela (Western Sydney Wanderers)- Tomislav Mrcela was solid in defence and scored the only goal in the game. The goal was scored in the 41st minute and was reward for effort as he made an exceptional marauding run forward.

Centre Back: Marcelo (Western Sydney Wanderers)- Marcelo did a great job for the Western Sydney Wanderers in the centre of defence. He didn’t put a foot wrong as his performance was one to savour, as he played his role for the team, in negating the likes of Nick D’Agostino and Nani from having an impact in the final third for Melbourne Victory.
Right Midfield: Joe Lolley (Sydney FC)- Joe Lolley worked tirelessly to help Sydney FC beat Western United comfortably in the end, despite conceding the first goal. He won the second penalty that Sydney FC were awarded, late in the first half, due to some great lead up work. He also scored their third goal in the 69th minute.
Centre Midfield: Calem Nieuwenhof (Western Sydney Wanderers)- Calem Nieuwenhof showed that at his best, which he was in Round 2, he deserves to at least be in the 55-man squad for the Socceroos. He put in an outstanding shift and worked hard both with and without the ball.
Centre Midfield: Angus Thurgate (Newcastle Jets)- Angus Thurgate provided stability for the Newcastle Jets in the middle of the park. The manner in which he passed the ball to his teammates was impressive.
Attacking Midfield: Matthew Leckie (Melbourne City)- Matthew Leckie played an outstanding game. He played the game as if it was a World Cup game for the Socceroos. When interviewed about a possible Socceroos call up, he said: “Just keep working hard and staying healthy.”
Left Midfield: Daniel Arzani (Macarthur FC)- Daniel Arzani was involved in both goals for Macarthur FC, as he broke the deadlock in the 27th minute and provided the assist for the second goal scored by Lachlan Rose in the second half. The main aspect of his game that’s important was in the post-match interview when he said: “Loving my football again.”
Striker: Ben Waine (Wellington Phoenix)- Ben Waine made many incisive runs and was rewarded by scoring the opening goal of the game in the 57th minute. In a post-match interview, Oliver Sail said the following about Waine: “Gets through a lot of running and a lot of work.”
Striker: Lachlan Rose (Macarthur FC)- Lachlan Rose had an impressive work rate and showed why Dwight Yorke chose to start him. He didn’t only show great endeavour for opportunities in the final third, but the manner in which he tracked back was impressive. In the end he was rewarded with a goal in the 57th minute, which was what his effort warranted.
