After resigning from the Bangladesh men’s head coach role in November 2017, Chandika Hathurusingha is back at the helm.

Although there is no confirmation on which formats he will take over, with Sridharan Sriram set to be in charge of the T20 team, it is expected that Hathurusingha will be in charge of the Test and ODI scheme of things – something that former Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo had to do in his final few months.

At the 2023 World Cup in India, Bangladesh are a side to watch out for, having become a formidable ODI team, which started during Hathurusingha’s first stint from 2014.

Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar would go all guns blazing in the powerplay, before the likes of Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim would stabilise the innings in the middle order. In this period, Bangladesh even went with a four-man seam seam attack of Mashrafe Mortaza, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman.

But that would soon change to a three-man attack and a few spinners due to fitness issues surrounding the quicks.

However, Hathurusingha comes back into the scheme of things with a much fitter side and a young crop of quicks ready to fire. He no longer has to rely upon the spinners to get it done all the time.

Bangladesh’s ODI series win in South Africa last year showed their seam attack can get the breakthroughs with the new ball and kill off games early.

Skipper Tamim Iqbal has been vocal many times within Bangladeshi media on how Hathurusingha got the best out of him and perhaps he will get the best out of Iqbal once again.

Bangladesh made the knockout stages of the 2015 World Cup and 2017 Champions Trophy, when Hathurusingha was coach, alongside famous Test wins vs England, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Hathurusingha’s first assignment in his second stint is a home ODI and T20 series vs England.

While series wins against England is a step in the right direction, the Bangladesh squad and its passionate fanbase will be eyeing something special at the World Cup.
