The NRL is set to use its discretionary powers to stand down Panthers centre Taylan May following his arrest on domestic violence charges.

The current rules are that the league’s no fault stand down policy only applies for offences that carry a maximum sentence of 11 years, but there are provisions for a decision to be made on a case-by-case basis by the NRL.

The Samoa international was taken into custody on Saturday morning ahead of the Panthers’ trip to Magic Round to face the New Zealand Warriors and was charged with domestic assault and stalking offences.

The Panthers subsequently lost the game, but coach Ivan Cleary refused to use the incident as an excuse.

“We just get on with life,” he said.

“We were here to play footy, that’s what we did, we just didn’t play well enough.”

A date has been set for the May 28, with May bailed until then.

“About 5am today (Saturday 18 May 2024), officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command arrested a 22-year-old man at an address at Penrith, in relation to an alleged domestic violence incident which occurred last month,” ead a police statement.

“Police were told about 9pm on Monday 8 April 2024, the man allegedly assaulted a woman known to him during an argument at a home in Werrington,” read a police statement.

“It is alleged he punched her in the face and leg.

“The man was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV), and two counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (DV).”

The NRL are yet to comment, but the Panthers released a statement saying they had informed the Integiry Unit.

“Penrith Panthers are aware of an alleged incident regarding player Taylan May, which has resulted in police charges,” said the club.

“Panthers has informed the NRL Integrity Unit and will co-operate throughout the process. As this is a legal matter, the club will make no further comment at this stage.”
