Round 3 of the Formula One world championship returns to the rollercoaster that is the 4.6km Algarve circuit in Portimão. Join The Roar for live updates of the Portuguese Grand Prix from midnight (AEST).
Like with Imola, the Portuguese Grand Prix is being held at a different time to last year and the warmer conditions along with a less slippery track surface have posed a different challenge to the drivers in 2021.
The title fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen spills over to this 66-lap race, as both drivers are separated by one point at the top of the table. In 2020, Portimão played host to Hamilton obliterating the field by 25 seconds and taking the all-time wins record in Formula One.
This time, Valtteri Bottas starts at the head of the field by claiming his first pole position of the season. Hamilton completed the Mercedes front-row lockout, having been denied a 100th career pole by 0.07 seconds.
Red Bull occupy the second row, led by Verstappen who starts in the same place he did in Imola, and then teammate Sergio Perez.
A slow start for Mercedes in 2020 and failing to get their tyres up to temperature allowed the McLaren of former driver Carlos Sainz to temporarily lead the race. But the downhill run into Turn 1 should prove exciting, with a pair of charging Red Bulls looking for the lead.
All four of those lead cars will be starting on the medium tyres, so this may also come down to pit-stop execution and who can under/overcut for track position.
Ferrari translated their pace as best of the rest this weekend into a solid qualifying, led by Sainz in fifth and Charles Leclerc in eighth. This could be a weekend to challenge McLaren in their narrow constructor’s championship battle – a shock Q1 exit means Daniel Ricciardo will have to work his way up from 16th.
First points of the year for the likes of Sebastian Vettel and George Russell could be a possibility too, as the former secured his first Q3 appearance in over 15 races. Meanwhile, Russell will be seeking redemption after his messy exit in Imola.
Verstappen has never led the championship before in his young career, so will the conclusion of the race finally see this achieved by the Dutchman? Or can Mercedes and Hamilton deny them the top spot?
Tune in on The Roar for live blog coverage of the Portuguese Grand Prix from midnight (AEST) for what will be another wild rollercoaster ride in Portimão.
