A man that causes debate whenever his name is mentioned among Manchester United and England fans is Danny Welbeck.

You either rate him, or you think he is rubbish.

This young man is the future of Manchester United. He isn’t as bad as some may have you believe.

First off, he’s only 23 and has already gained 21 caps for England. That’s pretty impressive, let alone the fact he has scored eight times for such a big footballing nation.

Some may argue that Welbeck’s scoring record for Manchester United is well below par when you compare him to Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

That’s the point; he isn’t yet anywhere near the level of these two world-class superstars.

In his 83 appearances for United he’s only managed to hit the back of the net 20 times.

This could have something to do with the fact that he has constantly been overawed by the presence of RVP and Rooney.

His game time as a sole striker has been limited to when injuries occurred to the two marquee players.

Welbeck possesses the type of high energy that United have lacked at times this season, and this was evident in his purple patch of form while Van Persie was out injured.

He’s scored nine times in the EPL this season and once in the Champions League, and for someone that is playing as third choice, that is actually quite a good record.

His energy and pace is what makes Welbeck a unique and dangerous attacking player for United – now and into the future.

He generally finds himself in the right positions when playing by himself up front.

David Moyes should highly consider starting him against Olympiakos (he really has nothing to lose) and see how Welbeck goes. You never know, the man may surprise a few.

At the young age of 23 (still a year younger than Liverpool and fellow England striker Daniel Sturridge) Welbeck could well and truly be the next big thing for United.

But he needs to get the opportunity to start more as the sole striker.

He has greatly improved over his time at United and is now a far more developed and mature player. He has shown glimpses of what he is capable of.

This young lad is a suitable replacement once Van Persie decides to hang up the boots or move away from the Red Devils, and he holds the future of United’s attack in the palm of his hand.
