Wanderers' season ends, Nix stay alive in premiership race, Perth humiliated again
And just like that, another A-League regular season (sans one game) is in the books and we look ahead to the finals. Let's recap…
Robert Lewandowski, the former Borussia Dortmund player, is currently under the spotlight.
Against Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday he scored, even though he is injured and is wearing a facial mask.
Some people point out that he is in this form because Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are out of the picture, while others tend to imply that Lewandowski was better off when the two players were still in action.
It is really a question that can be debated for long without a clear answer – and I’m quite sure that no concrete solution will show up.
In Bayern’s last five games, Lewandowski has scored two goals, one against his old side Borussia Dortmund and one in Bayern’s latest game, against Barcelona.
Munich won the match 3-2, but lose overall on aggregate after being beaten in the first fixture 3-0.
A couple of months ago, however, when Ribery and Robben weren’t yet injured, Lewandowski was in top form. He scored 10 goals in 16 games for the German champions.
This, and the injury of Robben and Ribery, is why he is currently the top scorer of the team. He has scored 23 goals in all competitions this year.
Maybe this comparison isn’t fair.
Maybe Lewandowski is not in a such good form right now because he is injured.
In his first 11 matches after Robben and Ribery’s injury, he was excellent. However he was not as good as he would’ve been if Robben and Ribery were present.
In these 11 games, Lewandowski scored 8 goals, which is very good, but 10 goals are more than 8, so, Lewandowski is better off with Robben and Ribery supporting him from his sides.
It will be cold comfort to Munich, however, as they bow out of the Champions League in the semi finals for the second straight season.
