He’s mastered the downward dog and learnt the basics of Spanish, but now Cameron Bancroft is ready to return to his true passion – cricket.
Bancroft will return to the sport he loves this Saturday when he lines up for club side Willetton in their one-day match against Midland-Guildford at Burrendah Park.
It will be the 25-year-old’s first match on WA soil since being busted for ball tampering during Australia’s Test loss to South Africa in Cape Town last March.
Steve Smith and David Warner copped one-year bans from international cricket over the incident, while Bancroft was suspended for nine months.
The saga rocked Bancroft’s world, and the talented opener has dug deep within himself since then to find a better life balance.
Bancroft took up Spanish shortly after his ban was handed down, and he has immersed himself in the yoga world, even doing a one-month training course in Melbourne recently.
The only competitive cricket Bancroft has played since his ban started was in July, when he took part in the Northern Territory Strike League in Darwin.
Bancroft averaged 31 across 10 matches, but his comeback for Willetton in the WA Premier Cricket League looms as a more significant milestone.
The right-hander has been named skipper of his side, and he’ll look to build up his form over the next 11 weeks.
Bancroft’s ban ends on December 29, meaning he could be an outside chance to return to the Test team for the fourth Test against India if Australia’s top order is struggling.
If he can’t force his way back in straight away, Bancroft will line up for the Perth Scorchers in their December 30 BBL showdown against the Hurricanes in Launceston.
