Update:

The AFL has named the 2018 All Australian team as follows.

2018 AFL All Australian team
B: Tom Stewart, Alex Rance, Rory Laird.
HB: Shannon Hurn, Jeremy McGovern, Lachie Whitfield.
C: Andrew Gaff, Dustin Martin, Steele Sidebottom.
HF: Patrick Dangerfield (VC), Lance Franklin (C), Robbie Gray.
F: Jack Gunston, Jack Riewoldt, Luke Breust.
Fol: Max Gawn, Patrick Cripps, Tom Mitchell.
Int: Brodie Grundy, Clayton Oliver, Shaun Higgins, Shane Edwards.

There was a surprise choice for the captaincy with eight-time All Australian Lance Franklin given the honours over the expected candidate Shannon Hurn.

Hurn of course has captained the West Coast Eagles to a top-two finish this year, while Franklin is not a member of Sydney’s seven-man leadership group.

Hurn didn’t get the nod as vice-captain either, with Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield picked for that position.

Richmond led the way with four players named in the side – Alex Rance for the fifth consecutive year, along with Jack Riewoldt, Dustin Martin and Shane Edwards.

The AFL name its 40-man squad for this year’s team on Monday, and is tonight set to select the best 22 from that squad.

The 40-man squad for the 2018 AFL Australian team is as follows:

Rory Laird (Adelaide), Harris Andrews, Dayne Beams (Brisbane), Patrick Cripps (Carlton), Jordan de Goey, Brodie Grundy, Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood), Devon Smith (Essendon), Lachie Neale (Fremantle), Mark Blicavs, Patrick Dangerfield, Tom Hawkins, Tom Stewart (Geelong), Callan Ward (GWS Giants), Lachie Whitfield (GWS Giants), Luke Breust, Jack Gunston, Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn), Max Gawn, Clayton Oliver (Melbourne), Ben Brown, Shaun Higgins (North Melbourne), Robbie Gray, Tom Jonas (Port Adelaide), Josh Caddy, Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards, Dylan Grimes, Kane Lambert, Dustin Martin, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt (Richmond), Lance Franklin, Jake Lloyd (Sydney), Andrew Gaff, Shannon Hurn, Jeremy McGovern, Elliot Yeo (West Coast), Jackson Macrae (Western Bulldogs).

Minor premiers Richmond have gotten the most nominees with eight, which is twice as many as any other club.

The Tigers seem likely to have at least four inclusions with Jack Riewoldt, Alex Rance, Dustin Martin and Josh Caddy all strong chances to be named.

Collingwood, Geelong and West Coast have all seen four of their players named, and will all likely see at least some of them make the final cut.

The selectors have an interesting choice to make between Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy for the ruck position, but most expect they’ll pick both.

Which will be named as ruck and which named on the bench however? Gawn seems likely to win first position after setting the season record for hitouts.

All will be revealed tonight. Join The Roar for a live blog as the team is named, starting from 8:30pm AEST.
