The 2018 AFL Draft will continue today after the first 22 selections were made at Marvel Stadium last night. Join The Roar for a live blog of every pick and every player selected on Day 2, starting from 12 noon AEDT.

There weren’t a huge number of surprises on the first night of the draft with probably the biggest story being Carlton’s decision to trade for a second first-round pick in order to draft Liam Stocker.

The Blues sent their 2019 first-round pick to Adelaide in exchance for pick 19 and Adelaide’s 2019 first-rounder, using 19 to pair Stocker with Sam Walsh who they had already selected at No.1.

The move gives them two high-talent draftees to add to their midfield mix right away in Round 1 2019, and it’s clear Carlton are backing themselves in to rise up the ladder next year.

There were a few players who surprised a little by going earlier than expected. Chayce Jones to Adelaide at pick 9, Sam Sturt to Fremantle at 16, Ely Smith to Brisbane at 21 and Xavier O’Halloran to GWS at 22 could all be considered bolters.

Meanwhile Jordan Clark was considered a potential top ten pick but slid to Geelong at pick 15, while Riley Collier-Dawkins was seen as a chance to go in the early tens but made it through to Richmond at pick 20.

Gold Coast secured South Australian pair Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine with picks 2 and 3 and then added Ben King also with pick 6, while Ben’s identical twin brother Max joined St Kilda at pick 4.

Port Adelaide got a great trio in Connor Rozee at pick 5, Zak Butters at 12 and Xavier Duursma at 18, while Bailey Smith at pick 7 to the Western Bulldogs and bids for Tarryn Thomas and Nick Blakey matched by North Melbourne and Sydney respectively rounded out the top ten.

Heading into Day 2, West Coast will start the day on the clock with their first pick of the draft, currently selection No.23.

Ian Hill, Luke Valente, Curtis Taylor and Jez McLennan are some of the bigger names still waiting to be picked, and players like Rhylee West, Kieren Briggs, Will Kelly, Bailey Scott and Connor McFadyen are still waiting to be bidded on.
