The sixth day of the 2022 trade period sees a number of trades awaiting proposed AFL tweaks to the current system before they can begin. Join The Roar for a live blog and rolling coverage of the day’s news, rumours and action from 9am (AEDT).
With just one trade on each of the last two days, most of the big players on the move – Josh Dunkley, Jacob Hopper and Luke Jackson to name but a few – remain in limbo, and are expected to drag on until deadline day Wednesday.
However, some of the smaller moves could all end up connecting, with a rumoured mega-trade in the works enabling Jason Horne-Francis and Junior Rioli to become Port Adelaide players.
The trade would see West Coast part with its prized pick 2 alongside Rioli, with GWS also involved.
The Roos would receive pick two from the Eagles and pick three from the Giants, the Giants pick one from the Roos, the Eagles picks eight and twelve from the Power and Giants, and Port land Rioli and Horne-Francis.
The sticking point is that the Eagles need permission to trade their pick 2, having only used one first-round pick in the past four years due to recent trades for, among other players, Tim Kelly. The league would need to approve the Eagles auctioning off that pick before the trade can get going.
Also under consideration is the AFL’s proviso that clubs can’t trade out excessive future selections; for instance, a team that trades their future first-rounder cannot trade any further picks, while a team that trades out second-, third- or fourth-round picks must at least hang onto their first pick.
This would also allow the Eagles room to move with their lot of picks, and potentially make a play for Luke Jackson with one of the two first-rounders they’d receive in the mega-trade.
